Barrie J Davies is an Artist
A one-man show by Cardiff artist Barrie J Davies.
Rather than pigeonhole himself as a painter, sculptor, interventionist, illusionist, binge drinker, or conceptualist, Barrie J Davies is an Artist. Barrie takes the logical approach that as an artist everything he does, by default, must be art. Taking mundane objects like post-it notes or piles of coins he transforms them into works of art, mostly by saying they are.
In his first solo show outside of his hometown, this exhibition takes a light-hearted look at the everyday object. His “Sculpture to fit a gap between the floor and the ceiling” is essentially a pile of empty beer from the floor to the ceiling. ‘Bad painting’ and ‘Unlimited Edition Print’ are in fact, just that.
‘Rejected’ on the other hand is an impressive work in progress – a file of rejection letters from the worlds’ greatest art establishments: The Tate Gallery, Charles Saatchi, the Guggenheim. They’re all there. In rejecting Barrie’s proposals they are unwittingly participating in the same project and is our first hint at substance behind the work. On closer inspection the other works reveal a hidden layer of subtext and commentary on urban artists struggle to redefine their territory. The mundane and everyday rebranded as art as if the tag of Art elevates its status. Barrie's work questions whether that is necessarily so Is art really that much better than selotape?
Barrie describes his work as “..Hovering between something, nothing and everything.” There’s certainly no trick of the light with his work. It’s more of a ‘Ronseal’ approach to art – it does exactly what is says on the tin; only with tongue firmly embedded in cheek. Through his use of entertainment he manages to question the whole notion of what we look for in art and the power of the gallery space to transform the viewers’ perceptions. Whether we perceive something to be good art is after all, just a matter of taste.

The work of Barrie J Davies ranges from the use of various media playing with meanings, images, objects and texts to create possible new fictions and reality to reassess the world and space around us through the guise of language and displacement. Humour is the catalyst in which is manipulated to help guide the work to possible understandings.

THE WORK OF THE ARTIST BARRIE J. DAVIES
Once upon a time there was an conceptual artist born in ye old Pembrokeshire, Wales, called Barrie J Davies.
Barrie J Davies is an artist who has anarchically explored the absurdity of contemporary life working in his paintings, photographs, sculptures, videos, films, drawings, performance works, publications, badges, posters, signs, public interventions and written works. He has exhibited his old unframed abstract paintings on paper and sold them for one pound each. He organised an art pub crawl called "on the piss" designed as a focus for getting people together to talk about art while going out for a night around the pubs in Cardiff. Documentation of this event was posted on his website barriejdavies.com and for the people that came along they were each given a limited edition badge which said "on the piss with Barrie J Davies". He has made a 'liberating' video work of releasing yellow bath-time ducks on to a lake alongside real ducks and swans to explore the man-made world against the natural world. He has set up the world's first "Museum of Nothingness", a project designed to collect and preserve objects in a briefcase to which the public has donated to represent their idea of 'nothing' and 'nothingness'. He has made many word and text based drawings and paintings which explore the ideas of contemporary art and its limitations. He has put up temporary text based signs and posters around the city of Cardiff to explore the confusion that we face in moving around in our daily lives. They have been documented as photographs. He has sold some artworks on Ebay when he has been strapped for cash. He has organised an exhibition of art works by other artists in the bathroom of his flat, called "All Washed up!". He has exhibited his collection of rejection letters from galleries for a ongoing project called "Rejected". This file of letters runs from 2002 to the present day. Another one of his projects was to introduce the "Unlimited Print" which is an unlimited edition, ink on A4 paper print (2004), which is available to download free from his website barriejdavies.com as a word document.
The artwork of Barrie J Davies explores the funny and the stupid things of life that make us laugh or get in the way or just get on our nerves or even make us fall over; they are always completely off the wall.

This album could be a waste of money to buy, the waste of a compact disc and even a waste of time. Even the cover looks like it was designed by a U grade GCSE art student.
Making an album of musical tracks for many deejays and musicians is usually based on style, tunes, beats, timing, grooves, hype and lyrical content.
But the artist Barrie J Davies presents his premiere album of music and sonic art outside these contexts.
This album of eighteen tracks brings together the lo-fi psychedelic punk disco sounds from the gutter of the mind of Barrie J Davies to his public.
With songs about honey nut cornflakes, boredom, singing on the toilet, a computer turning off and why won’t Charles Saatchi buy his artwork.
This album, as stated in its title might be complete crap, but the artist Barrie J Davies does not care; it’s about getting things off his chest, voicing his ideas, hopes and fears but with a car boot sale techno disco beat.
This album is available from his bedroom recording label called
Barrie J Davies Home Tape Recordings and it is not available in shops because of its weird odd rare content, but it’s only available for sale on eBay to collectors of the weird and wonderful crap to enjoy.
Each copy of this album is signed and dated by the artist Barrie J Davies
